Five rules for dealing with bad behavior:
1. First off, let’s be clear about this: it is a new day in the workplace. If you are the target of any form of sexual harassment, physical or verbal abuse, or bullying, speak up. Blow the whistle loud and long to whomever is in charge. Make it clear that if the behavior isn’t addressed immediately, you’ll take the issue upstairs or to the press. Protect yourself. However, if the bad behavior is not sexual in nature or directly abusive, here’s my suggestion…
2. If the person who’s behaving badly (selfishly, rudely, aggressively) is the star or the boss, do your best not to engage. Take a deep breath and try to work around them.
3. Even if the troublemaker is not the star or your boss, try to keep your feelings to yourself. Offer the individual as much cooperation as you can. You’re not in their shoes, so it’s impossible to truly know where this is coming from. Sometimes, if you are supportive, they will calm down and things will improve.
4. If you are confronted with a nutcase or a monster and you have a solid relationship with the director or producer, discreetly plead your case, but never say it’s impossible to work with this person. If the person is the star, that comment might get you released from your contract. Align yourself with the good guys and try to get through the experience. It’s a drag, but it won’t last forever, and as I mentioned before, it will turn into a good story. Plus, you will grow as an artist and as a human being by going through it.
5. Once again, if the problem is sexual harassment or physical or verbal abuse, don’t be polite or patient about it. Call it out. Such behavior is no longer acceptable. Period.
